Gary Robert Norton, a longtime Ridgefielder and RHS graduate, died Aug. 14 after a long illness.

He was born in Bellport, N.Y. on June 22, 1950, son of Doris (Savastio) Norton and the late Robert Lawrence Norton of Gales Ferry. He graduated from Ridgefield High School and attended Western Connecticut State College.

For a time he worked in the restaurant business in Lake Placid, N.Y., where he met his first wife, the former Heidi Grote, and returned to Ridgefield where their son Joshua was born.

He was employed at the Katonah-Lewisboro School in New York for 30 years as the maintenance foreman of operations and met his second wife, the former Karen Ralphs.

He retired at 62 and moved to Gales Ferry. He was a carpenter and musician.

Survivors include his son, Joshua Scott Norton of New Milford; his mother, Doris Norton of Gales Ferry; his brother, Jeffrey Scott Norton and wife, Nancy, of West Burke, Vt.; his sister, Carol Norton-Lussier of Canterbury; his nieces, Holly Beth Norton of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Stephanie Ann Lussier of Canterbury; and his aunts, uncles and cousins. He also leaves his two former wives with whom he remained friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at noon on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. There are no visiting hours. Burial will be private.
