Alice Freitas Nell, 88
Alice Freitas Nell, 88 of Ridgefield Connecticut, passed away peacefully on April 29,
2016 at Regional Hospice in Danbury Connecticut.
Alice was born on July 23, 1927 the daughter of Celestina and Manuel Freitas,
who were natives of Madeira Island, Portugal.
She grew up in Greenwich Village, New York and was graduated from Cathedral
High School where she was encouraged to join the Civil Service. Her first Civil Service
job was on Governor’s Island where she became the administrative assistant to the Chief
Alice married in 1953 and spent the early years with her three young children in
Manhattan’s Stuyvesant Town. In 1968 the family moved to Ridgefield.
When her children were grown she worked in the clerical field and then began a twenty
year career with GE Capital in Stamford, where she was a well respected administrative
In retirement she continued attending daily Mass at St. Mary Church where she had
taught CCD and had volunteered in various programs. She was particularly blessed by
her hours in the Adoration Chapel. Alice was an early member of Founder’s Hall where
she played bocce, studied Opera, World religions, Renaissance Art and exercised
faithfully. She enjoyed European travel and monthly trips to Broadway plays and fine
restaurants in the New York City she loved.
Alice is survived by her son, Robert Nell, daughters, Elizabeth
Nell and Alice Skelton (James) her sister, Barbara Barton (Patrick), her grandchildren,
Nicole and Michael Nell, Jaime, Daniel and Matthew Skelton, her niece, Diana Cahill,
nephew Christopher Barton, and three grand-nieces and three grand-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church, 55 Catoonah
Street, Ridgefield, Ct. on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10:15 A.M.. Internment will be at the
convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Regional
Hospice and Home Care, 30 Milestone Rd, , Danbury Connecticut, 06810.
