National Weather Service forecasts heavy rain, possible thunderstorms Sunday night into Monday

Get out your raincoats, it’s going to be wet and windy.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a strong frontal system will approach the region Sunday afternoon and will cross the area Monday, April 16.

"This system will bring a combination of heavy rain along with the chance of a few thunderstorms, gusty winds, and minor to locally moderate coastal flooding to the region late tonight into Monday," the forecast read. "Before then, a light wintry mix is possible this afternoon across the interior."

A widespread 2 to 3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, is expected through Monday.

The heaviest rain will fall late tonight into Monday afternoon, with 1 ½ to 2 inches possible in a 6-9 hr period, posing the following threats:

  • An area wide minor urban and poor drainage flooding threat.
  • Potential for localized flash flooding, particularly along the coast during the times of high tide Monday morning into early afternoon.
  • Rapid rises are expected on flash streams in Northeastern New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley, with potential for minor flood impacts.

Although thunderstorms are possible Monday morning into Monday Afternoon, they are not expected to be severe at this time, the forecast said.
