Petitioners seeking an anti-fracking ordinance in town have collected the necessary amount of signatures for a town meeting.

Michael Garguilo, who organized the petition earlier this fall, told The Press on Nov. 9 that he had collected 674 signatures — “well above the needed 2%” for a town meeting.

“We could have got even more if we weren’t just dads with full-time jobs and had limited time to be out in public,” said Garguilo, who turned in the petition to Town Clerk Wendy Lionetti that same day.

Garguilo hopes that an ordinance would not only prohibit oil and gas fracking in town, but restrict the use of by-products from the process.

“The ‘fracking waste’ petition has been met with huge support from people and businesses around town,” he said.

A town meeting date has not been set yet.
