Ridgefield police investigate bomb threats

Emailed bomb threats have created a disturbance across the country Thursday, Dec. 13, and Ridgefield is no exception.

The Ridgefield Police Department has announced that its currently investigating bomb threat reports in town.

"Members of our uniform and detective divisions are following up on these incidents," the department posted on its Facebook. "The emails are similar to ones received across Connecticut today. It appears, but is not yet confirmed, that these emails are part of a mass mailing."

Those receiving threatening emails or witnessing suspicious activity on the web should call the Ridgefield Police Department at 203-438-6531.

In addition to Ridgefield, there have been several reported bomb threats through email in the Danbury area — two in Danbury, one in Newtown.

In New York City, police and counterterrorism officials have deemed the emailed bomb threats as "not credible."

"There is an email being circulated containing a bomb threat asking for bitcoin payment," the New York City Police Department said on Twitter. "While this email has been sent to numerous locations, searches have been conducted and NO DEVICES have been found."

Several media outlets have called the emails "a hoax."
