Ridgefield police: Car stolen from Walgreens parking lot Saturday night found in Waterbury

The Ridgefield Police Department is investigating a car theft that happened outside of Walgreens on Danbury Road around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30.

According to Capt. Jeff Kreitz, the car that was stolen was a 2016 BMW X5.

It was later found abandoned in Waterbury, he said.

" The complainant advised officers that he had parked his vehicle and left it running while he went into a local business," Capt. Kreitz said. "A short time later the complainant observed a male in his 20s drive off with his vehicle."

It is the 16th car that was reported stolen in 2017.

Capt. Kreitz said that a Ridgefield office spotted the vehicle, which left the parking lot traveling north on Danbury Road, traveling on Danbury Road in the vicinity of Tanton Hill Road. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the car thief never stopped and "began passing vehicles at a high rate of speed at which time the officer discontinued the pursuit."

Left behind

Ridgefield police believe the suspect drove down to Ridgefield in a 2013 Ford Edge and left that car behind at the Gulf station on Danbury Road.

"At approximately 9:15 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the Gulf station located at 115 Danbury Road for a vehicle that had been left running and unattended for an extended period of time," Capt. Kreitz said. "Upon arrival at the gas station the officer determined that the vehicle in question, a 2013 Ford Edge, was previously reported stolen out of Newington.

"We believe that this vehicle was left by the individual who stole the BMW at 46 Danbury Road," Capt. Kreitz added.

State-wide problem

Throughout this past year vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles have been a widespread problem throughout the state, Capt. Kreitz said.

"We would like to remind everyone to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables to include the keys," he added. "Furthermore please do not leave your vehicle running and unattended.

"In this last incident the vehicle operator took the smart key from the vehicle however the thief was still able to drive the car. Remember to be vigilant and report all suspicious activity."
