Police: Stop abandoning pets at shelters

The Ridgefield Police Department is reminding residents that leaving unwanted pets at the door of a shelter is considered abandonment.

The department said the town shelter, as well as shelters in surrounding towns, have had several incidents where people abandon their pets this way. The practice is illegal, the department said.

“When an animal is left at the door of a shelter, there is no confirmation of valid rabies inoculations, as well as any other defects or diseases that the animal may potentially have. This causes risk to employees, other animals, and anyone else that may come in contact with these abandoned animals.”

Police ask that residents contact Ridgefield Animal Control at 203-431-2711.
