Fountain accident: Tree-truck driver drove too fast, police say
A 21-year-old Norwalk man who crashed a tree-service truck into the Cass Gilbert Fountain on the corner of Main Street and West Lane was traveling too fast for the road conditions, Ridgefield police said. The man struck the fountain sometime at 8:27 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18.
Police say the driver applied the brakes as he approached the fountain eastbound on West Lane, but skidded and struck the fountain, damaging the holiday decorations which covered the Ridgefield landmark. Police say the crash did no structural damage to the fountain, but two planters and a pane of protective glass were destroyed in the accident.
The driver was issued a summons for driving too fast for the road conditions, and for operating a motor vehicle without a license. The report said the damage to the tree-service truck involved in the accident was moderate, and the vehicle was not towed away from the scene.
No other cars were involved in the crash.
