Ridgefielders in Pyeongchang: Diffey to call West's luge race Saturday

Halfway across the world, two Ridgefielders are getting ready for the start of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Tucker West and Leigh Diffey found each other  in Pyeongchang, South Korea earlier today —Monday, Feb. 5 — and posed for a picture together. The pair will be reconnected Saturday morning during the men's luge competition. West will be racing part of Team USA, while Diffey will be in the press box calling the event for NBC.

"The fact that I'll be calling Tucker's race is even more small world!" said Diffey in an email to Playhouse Executive Director Allison Stockel Monday morning.

The XXIII Olympic Winter Games kick off Friday, Feb. 9, during an opening ceremony set to begin at 8 a.m. EST. NBC will broadcast the ceremony Friday evening at 8 p.m.

The men's luge competition is the first event following the opening ceremony Saturday, Feb. 10. The first and second run will be held from 7:10 to 10:20 a.m. EST Saturday, with the third and fourth runs scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 11, at 6:50 to 9:35 a.m.

In Ridgefield, viewers can watch Tucker compete Saturday afternoon via a video stream that will be broadcast at Tigers' Den on Catoonah Street. If he qualifies for the USA men's relay team, West will compete in the luge team relay event Thursday, Feb. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. EST.

Realtor Leslie Krichko, a former Olympian, is leading the Team Tucker movement back home.

She said signs are still available for purchase at William Pitt Sotheby's on Main Street. There will also be signs available at the Chamber of Commerce on Grove Street and Stop & Shop on Danbury Road later this week.
