Students in the Investment Club at Ridgefield High School raised money for Meals on Wheels through their annual FUNDraiser. Meals on Wheels representative Debra Franceschini visited RHS on Thursday, June 15, to meet with club members and accept the donation.

At the beginning of the school year, Investment Club President Tom Lombardozzi told family friends and Ridgefield resident Allan Linke about the fund-raiser. Linke, a financial adviser at Merrill Lynch, loved the idea and decided to match any money the club raised dollar for dollar.

The FUNDraiser was started last year by Lombardozzi as a way to incentivize Investment Club members to pay attention to the year-long simulated investment portfolio, while raising money for a worthy cause. Lombardozzi suggested tying the club’s investment fund performance to the amount the club would donate. For example, if a donor pledged $100 and the fund increased by 10%, the full donation given by the donor would be $110.

Investment Club members worked throughout the school year making investment decisions for the simulated portfolio and asking for pledges. Club members also created a spreadsheet to track the portfolio’s performance in real-time.

After the fund dipped as low as -5.7%, it finished up 1.6% with big gainers including Nutanix, Amazon and Nvidia.
