Post University has asked Birgitta Stone, the founder and president of Local Social Media, to be an adviser on the school’s five-person panel lending real-world expertise to shape the curriculum of the social media concentration under the bachelor of arts in communication and media studies program.

Local Social Media, established in 2011, is an online digital content and marketing company designed to create consistent local branding for clients.

“Students are flocking to digital media in droves,” Stone says. “They are looking for future employment in digital, social media, communications and online media. Those who possess certifications in digital social communications are in higher demand and have an advantage over other job seekers.”

Stone launched her business on the cusp of the social media marketing boom — the same year Snapchat was born and Facebook debuted its business page format. She remembers business owners in those early years, and said not everyone was a believer.

“It’s important to understand that social media marketing is a form of advertising,” Stone notes. “There’s more to it than simply loving social media. There is a skill set in marketing that needs to be learned. Many clients have family members, or employees work their social accounts. That’s not going to work. It takes a specific online marketing expertise to make the most of your advertising.”
