Jazz and Funk Weekend planned for September
A Jazz and Funk Weekend showcasing varied jazz sounds around town is being planned for the fall — Thursday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Sept. 15, or possibly Sunday, Sept. 16.
“It looks like it’s going to be a really good weekend of jazz shows,” said Allison Stockel, executive director of the Ridgefield Playhouse.
“I think it’ll be good. Lots going on for people to come and visit our town. It’s a good time of year in Ridgefield and Connecticut, the fall.”
It’s still in the early planning stages, but the principal venues are expected to be CHIRP, which would have a jazz act for its Thursday night concert in the park, the Playhouse, which would have a Saturday night jazz performance, the Ridgefield Library, and the Aldrich Museum.
Many restaurants in town are envisioned as participating, by having jazz performers for entertainment.
The idea of a “jazz festival” has been kicked around since it grew out of a conservation between Stockel and the Economic and Community Development Commission last August. But at a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 6, organizers decided it would be simpler to keep it to a jazz weekend, with collaborative planning and coordinated promotions.
“A true festival is a large undertaking. It’s not just three or four shows,” Stockel said.
“I don’t want to call it a festival and have anyone be disappointed.”
