Disruptive Technologies to host robotics competition Saturday, Nov. 17

The new rookie robotics team out of Ethan Allen Preparatory, Disruptive Technologies, FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 7462, founded by EAP student G. Edward Bell, will host an official First Lego League (FLL) qualifying event as part of the New England FIRST Region of FLL.

The robotics tournament, which the team has named “G.O.T. G.O.A.T.” (The Gathering of the Greatest of All-Time) because in sports, GOAT stands for Greatest of All-Time and robotics is the sport of the mind, will be held on Saturday, Nov.17, at Saint Mary School, 183 High Ridge Avenue. Sixteen middle school teams from throughout Connecticut are registered to compete.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen. Every year FIRST releases a challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. This year’s challenge for FLL is called Into Orbit and is related to space exploration. The challenge has three parts: Robot game, a project and core values.

Elementary and middle-school students’ teams of up to 10 members, with at least two adult coaches, must design, build and program an autonomous Lego Mindstorm robot to complete missions and score points on a themed playing field (the robot game). For the project, team members will develop critical thinking and presentation skills as the team must identify a problem within the rules of the challenge, develop a solution to the problem they identified and present their solutions to judges, all while exhibiting FIRST Core Values, which emphasize discovery, teamwork and good sportsmanship. Ultimately, five teams will advance to compete at the Connecticut FLL State Championships on Dec. 1.

Open to the public, the event begins at 9 a.m., is free and concessions will be available for purchase.
