Boy Scout builds recycling bins
New plastic bag and film recycling bins have replaced the dumpsters at the Ridgefield Recycling Center. Behind this improvement is Boy Scout Charlie Snow, at right, of Troop 76. As part of his community project to earn the rank of Eagle, Snow designed and managed the construction of two plastic collection bins located at the front of the recycling building.
These new containers accept plastic bags and other thin plastic items which should not be dumped into the mixed recycling compactors. As a benefit, the bins will streamline the collection of shopping bags, food bags, air pillows, packaging wrap and film, etc.
In addition to building the bins, Snow led other scouts in the troop in clearing the overgrown vines and weeds around the Recycling Center fence as well as emptying the cans and bottles from the ScoutsCAN bins. Money collected from these deposit containers is donated to local organizations, such as the Ridgefield Food Pantry.
