Heat advisory in effect for today and Thursday

An excessive heat threat has given the National Weather Service cause to declare a heat advisory in effect for today — Wednesday, Aug. 15 — and Thursday, Aug. 16, in New York City and its surrounding suburbs.

The max temperatures are believed to range from 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit Wednesday afternoon.

The max heat indices range from mid to uppers 90s, the weather service reported.

"The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure," the weather service said. "Extreme heat can cause illness and death among the at-risk population who can not stay cool.

"Seniors, infants, and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk from the heat."

A look ahead to Thursday's forecast reveals hotter temperatures.
