To the Editor:
Despite ongoing reports of hateful behavior in national news, a recent local encounter has cheered me.
On Halloween night — horror of horrors — I ran out of candy. How embarrassing. But the teens on my front porch at the time kindly commiserated. One even said, “oh, you can have some of mine,” and transferred a huge fistful of candy from her bag to my empty basket.
Besides being generous, this showed a bit of thinking outside the box: trick-or-treating by giving back candy — what a concept!
Everyone wins, including my next batches of visitors.
So thanks, young neighbors, for a lovely moment.
