Letter: The Epstein case and the importance of a free local press

Over the years, I have written a number of letters to The Ridgefield Press reminding it of its solemn duty under the First Amendment to remain free, diligent and thorough.

It is worth noting that the just reported Epstein matter, which may prove to be of great importance to the entire country, was brought to light by the efforts of a local newspaper and a courageous local reporter. Hence the need for independence.

It may be that this story has ramifications that extend the State of Connecticut, the County of Fairfield, and perhaps, even our own town.

As events unfold I hope your newspaper will uphold the highest standards as a free press — maybe one of the last few hopes of our country.
