Kansas City police: Man found dead after hourslong standoff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A man was found dead early Thursday following an hourslong standoff and fire at a Kansas City apartment complex, police said.

The incident began around 1 a.m. Thursday when a woman called 911 to report a man in her apartment whom she said had earlier escaped from custody, police said in a news release. Officers arrived and tried to talk the man into leaving the apartment, but he refused, saying he had a gun and would not leave peacefully, according to police.

A SWAT team was called in, and police said the man could be seen trying to start a fire inside the apartment where flames later erupted. Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire, and both firefighters and police entered the apartment, where they found the man dead. Police did not immediately release his name or details on how he died.

No one else was injured in the standoff or fire.
