Fresh Air kids arrived on Friday, July 5.

A bus from New York City dropped off five children at Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, handing them over to host families from area towns for summer visits of a week or two.

The Fresh Air Fund sends children from New York City to stay with host families around the East Coast for stays in suburban or rural communities where they can enjoy the benefits of summer’s outdoor pleasures — swimming, bike riding, green grass and woods. The Fresh Air Fund also has a camp in Fishkill, N.Y. It has provided summer experiences for more than 1.8 million city children since its founding in 1877.

Of the six kids who got off the bus at Jesse Lee on Friday, two were staying with families in Redding, three with families in New Canaan, and with a family in Brookfield.

One Ridgefield family was due to host a child, but his arrival was postponed.

Another Fresh Air bus will come to Jesse Lee Church on Aug. 8 to drop off more children for summer vacations with host families.

The Fresh Air organization isn’t seeking more host families for this summer, but people interested in hosting children in the future may contact: Nicole Johnston, njohnston@freshair.org.

More information on the program is also available at freshair.org.
