Southbury eyes pool, tennis club for $2 million
SOUTHBURY — The town is considering a $2 million purchase of the Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club to replace the local pool and serve other needs.
The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted Thursday evening to pay a $3,000 fee to secure the option to buy Middlebury facility. The town has until July 31 to exercise this option. Voters would need to give their final approval of the purchase in a town meeting or referendum. An ad hoc committee will examine the idea.
The facility is across the street from Region 15’s Longmeadow Elementary School, which serves students from Southbury and Middlebury.
The 50-year-old town pool at Ballantine Park would cost between $2.9 million to $4.2 million to replace, the town said.
Students at Pomperaug High School already use the tennis courts at Edgewood because the high school’s need a $1 million replacement, the town said.
Town officials said they see Edgewood as a possible option for a regional community center or similar YMCA-like facility.
Edgewood has been on the market since September 2018, with an asking price of $2.2 million, the town said.
