Fire at Bethel bus depot
BETHEL — Three school buses caught fire at the bus depot on Henry Street on Sunday, in an incident firefighters said “could have been much worse.”
According to a post on the Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Department Facebook, shortly before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, firefighters from the Bethel and Stony Hill volunteer departments were dispatched to depot on a report of multiple buses on fire.
Bethel Car 1 arrived on scene finding one mini bus and one regular school bus fully involved. A second full-size bus was becoming involved, firefighters said.
According to the Facebook post, “the situation could have been much worse if it werent for the observant Bethel Police Officer who (smelled) smoke in the Greenwood Ave area,” the post read. “Recognizing that the odor wasnt just chimney smoke, the officer began to search the downtown area, quickly finding the source on Henry Street.”
