Xavier dominates en route to fifth straight SCC wrestling championship

After a year away from competition, No. 1 Xavier hosted the SCC Wrestling Championships and claimed its fifth consecutive title.

The Falcons’ run in the SCC has been dominant, having claimed nine of the last 10 titles only losing in 2016 to Foran.

Xavier sent 10 wrestlers to the finals on Saturday, all of whom won their matches and were crowned individual SCC champions. There were 14 total final bouts.

“That has never happened,” Xavier coach Michael Cunningham said. “We have had a lot of winners in the finals but never like this. I am really happy with their performances. I can’t compare one team to the other, but these guys are definitely up there. They are one of the best teams we have ever had.”

Xavier finished with a whopping 264 points, more than double the amount of second-place Branford, which boasted one champion. It also broke the record of 233 (set by Xavier in 2015).

“These kids, we are a young team, but they are buying into the culture and the expectations of the program,” Xavier coach Michael Cunningham said. “It is starting to pay off, they come in every day and put in the work. I consider this the start of the postseason and it is starting to pay off, I am happy.”

Fairfield Prep finished third with 118 points and Guilford came in fourth with two individual champions at 104.5 points.

Xavier’s Raekwon Shabazz (106), Maximus Morse (113), Jackson Heslin (120), Kyle Levesque (126), Anthony Basile (132), Dylan Levesque (138), Matthew Ferrucci (145), Colin Loria (152), Charles Weidman (160), and Thomas Lunt (220) all took home gold medals for Xavier.

The SCC Most Outstanding Wrestler was awarded to Shelton senior Matthew Weiner, who was crowned the SCC champion in the 285-pound division. The GameTimeCT First Team All-State football selection is now a two-time SCC wrestling champion.

“I have never gotten most outstanding wrestler no matter how well I have done,” Wiener said. “I feel like this year I am not making some mistakes I would in previous years, and I am in a really good spot.”

Weiner has had his mind set on the SCC title and beyond since the beginning of the Winter season and feels as if he is ready for the upcoming challenges.

“I am trying to win New Englands and Opens,” Wiener said. “I am setting my expectations high and I will just do what I can.”

Branford’s Cole Snider was the 170-pound champion, while Guilford’s Brent Strand (182) and Christopher Murphy (195) were also individual champions.

Xavier will now look forward to the next set of tasks ahead, as the top team in the state will look to continue proving it deserves to be exactly that.

“I wanted us to wrestle hard and believe in ourselves,” Cunningham said. “We needed to prepare for the State Tournament and the next level. We wanted to put ourselves in a good position going in and I think we did that. We can’t control the outcome, only how hard we work.”
