NEW HAVEN — Depth is a key factor when it comes to winning team titles in championship meets. Fairfield Prep didn’t have a win among its swimmers at the Southern Connecticut Conference championship on Wednesday at Southern Connecticut State. But its depth in the championship heats paid off for a team title win with 1,007 points. Xavier was second with 957 points and North Haven co-op was third with 822. Another contributing factor to Fairfield Prep’s team title was depth in the diving championships that were held on Saturday at Sheehan. Thomas Kehoe won the diving championship with 487.25 points and the Jesuits captured sixth through ninth — 6. Dylan Morrissey (290.95), 7. John McDermott (288.55), 8. Rocco Leito (283.05) and 9. John Mathews (271.85). “No swim wins but so many guys came through for us tonight,” Fairfield Prep coach Rick Hutchinson said. It is his eighth title in the 10 years he has coached the Jesuits and their first since 2019. “The diving was key for us and our divers have been coming through for us all season,” Hutchinson said. “From our seniors to our freshmen, they all contributed. This is a great way to go into the state meets.” Among the top contributors for the Jesuits were Owen Tharrington and the coach’s son, Hugh Hutchinson. Tharrington was second in the 100 backstroke (51.70) and second in the 100 butterfly (52.14) and Hutchinson was third in the 500 freestyle (4:52.13). Xavier earns six wins Xavier kicked off the meet with wins in the first two events. The Falcons won the 200 medley relay in 1:38.38 and Maxwell Enes won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.08. Teammate Noah San Vicente was a close second in 1:45.10. San Vicente led most of the 200 freestyle and Enes came on strong to take the lead in the last lap for the win. San Vicente came back to win the 500 freestyle. Also getting a win for the Falcons was Nikita Zuev with a time of 48.09 in the 100 freestyle. The Falcons also won the 200 freestyle (1:28.60) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:15.74). “We have no divers, so as far as the team title is concerned, we had to make up 140 points coming in here and that is tough,” Xavier coach Bill Evison said. “Everyone who won for us tonight I expected to be in the top two or three in their event. We aren’t shaved yet, so I am very happy and excited with the wins we’ve had tonight. All our guys worked hard for this.” Lee wins a pair Elliot Lee of Hand won the 50 freestyle in 20.98 and won the 100 butterfly in 50.0. He led start to finish in both events. “All the hard work I put in during the regular season paid off tonight,” Lee said “I swam the events the way I always swim. I go out hard, get an early lead and whatever happens, happens. “Getting two wins is special, it gives you some momentum going into the state meets. Everyone on our team has been working hard and a lot of our swimmers are doing well tonight. We’re ready for the states.” Henry missing, Conner wins two for North Haven Changing the complexion of the meet was the loss of North Haven co-op standout Finn Henry who missed the meet due to COVID-19. Henry was the favorite in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. He would have also competed in relays. “Losing Henry is a big loss,” North Haven co-op coach Mike O’Brien said. “But we expect him to be back for the state meets.” Brendan Conner came through with a win for North Haven in the 200 individual medley (1:55.57) and he won the 100 backstroke (50.52). “It was disappointing Finn Henry wasn’t here tonight,” Rick Hutchinson said. “We all hope he is doing well.” SCC Championships (at New Haven) Team Results: 1.
