WOODBURY — No. 1 Nonnewaug (16-0-1) made a first-half goal stick for a 1-0 second-round Class M boys soccer win over No. 16 WCA (10-5-3) in an irresistible force vs. immovable object contest that left heroes all over the field at Nonnewaug High School Thursday night. Andrew Greene gathered his own rebound off a Spartan defender close to the WCA goal 23 minutes into the game, left-footing it in for the winning score. But on a night when Nonnewaug peppered some 20 shots at the Spartan goal, pausing for just two WCA shots at the other end, it was fitting that the goal came off a defender because the Spartan defense was in the Chiefs’ faces all night. When Nonnewaug broke through for quality shots — 14 of them — freshman goalkeeper Silas Creaven stood in the net, ready for the saves, many of them spectacular. “They practice their defense year-round,” said WCA coach Dave Sylvester. “It makes for a great defense, starting in the back with (Creaven).” “There’s no such thing as a bad state tournament win,” said Nonnewaug coach Toby Denman after his players were frequently trapped with no outlet in the red zone, despite controlling the ball for most of the game. “(WCA) kept some players back and the passing lanes weren’t there,” he said. “Their defense did great,” acknowledged Greene. Still, it was Nonnewaug’s game to win from the start. Aiden Colby got off the Chiefs’ first shot 4 minutes into the game. In another 4, Creaven batted a shot out of traffic for his first big save. Fifteen minutes in, another shot glanced off the post. Greene fought for his goal in the 23rd minute. Two minutes later, WCA got off its only shot of the half to Nonnewaug keeper Dylan Chung. The second half was a repeat of the first — lots of Nonnewaug shots, lots of WCA defense. “We played as a team and didn’t give up,” said Creaven. The Chiefs hope to keep their offense rolling in a quarterfinal game against No. 8 Ledyard Saturday at 2 p.m. at Nonnewaug. The Colonels (15-3) beat No. 9 Granby 3-0 Thursday.
