Boys hoop: Tigers top Greenwich in state opener

Rallying for victories during the regular season became almost a pattern for the Ridgefield High boys basketball team.

On Monday night, the Tigers added another comeback win in the state tournament.

Trailing 37-34 after three quarters, Ridgefield rallied for a 58-47 triumph over Greenwich in a Class LL first-round game at RHS.

The ninth-seeded Tigers (17-5) will now play eighth-seed New Britain in a second-round game Wednesday night at 7 in New Britain. New Britain defeated Staples, 71-58, in another opening round game Monday.

Ridgefield began the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to go ahead, 43-37. The Tigers upped their lead to 49-41 with just over two minutes left and weren’t threatened after that.

Ridgefield led 17-10 after one quarter and 24-23 at halftime.

Kurt Steidl scored 24 points to pace Ridgefield. Jeff Racy added 16 points and Patrick Racy had eight points.

Greenwich, the 24th seed, ends the season with an 11-11 record.
