To the Editor:
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the hazards from Styrofoam is five times worse than originally thought. It is made from petroleum and stays on this planet for a minimum of 500 years; not biodegradable. In addition, it’s made from benzene and other very bad chemicals. It’s a cause of cancer and also attributable to the onset of Parkinson’s disease. My grandfather had Parkinson’s for 20 years from benzene and other contaminants from the dry cleaning store he worked at. It’s a serious matter.
Founders Hall serves hot coffee in Styrofoam cups. They were asked to discontinue and their answer was that the cups were cheaper than paper. Why does McDonald’s serve coffee only in paper cups? Its corporate responsibility to this planet and its people.
Why not Founders Hall? Because it is not against the law … yet.
State Sen. Haskell, please help pass this law. In the meantime, Founders Hall should consider stopping its use of Styrofoam. It’s a health hazard to our planet and its people.
