It took the Ridgefield High boys golf team all of one match this season to improve upon what it did all of last season.
With three players shooting in the 30’s, the Tigers defeated Norwalk, 146-189, on Monday at the Ridgefield Golf Course.
Ridgefield’s 146 score was 11 strokes lower than its best regular-season total (157) from 2018.
Senior Oliver Frossell shot a one-under par 34 to lead the Tigers.
Junior Brandon Tuccio and sophomore Chris Lang recorded matching one-over scores of 36, and senior Mark Habeeb completed the scoring with a 40.
Senior Henry Garlick shot a 50 for Ridgefield’s fifth (non-counting) score.
Norwalk was paced by its number one player, Sean Donnelly, who shot a 40.
Ridgefield head coach Ray Bielizna has no reason to believe Monday’s season-opening performance was a fluke.
“We believe we will finish in the top three in the [FCIAC] this year along with Greenwich and Darien,” Bielizna said. “The team returns several starting golfers from last year’s 10-5 team, [which] finished fourth with a great showing at the FCIAC tournament.”
In addition to Frossell, Tuccio, Lang, Habeeb, and Garlick, seniors Heston Pinard, Simon van Wees, Luke Faillaci, and Max Goldfluss could also receive varsity playing time this spring, along with juniors Wally Pratt and Colin Hogan, sophomore Mike Conciatore (the JV captain), and freshman Sean Maue.
“This could be a great year for Ridgefield golf; we have several players who can go low at anytime,” Bielizna said. “Hopefully, we will have days where the golf gods smile upon us and everyone puts it all together.”
