Moving up two places from last year, the Ridgefield High boys swim team finished second to Greenwich at the Class LL state championship meet Monday at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
The Tigers scored 598 points to beat Fairfield Prep (537) for the runner-up spot behind Greenwich, which won its seventh straight Class LL title and 26th in 28 seasons.
Ridgefield was fourth at last year’s Class LL meet with 514 points.
Sophomore Connor Hunt and senior Will Bryant combined to win three individual events for the Tigers on Monday afternoon.
Hunt supplied two of those victories, finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
Hunt earned the first-place medal in the 200 freestyle by touching the wall in 1:41.02. Glastonbury senior McAllister Milne placed second (1:41.71), followed by Staples senior John McNab (1:42.26).
“That was a new lifetime best for me in the 200 freestyle, so I’m really happy with it,” Hunt said. “I was fortunate to have McAllister Milne and John McNab right next to me. They both pushed me and helped me to swim really fast.”
In the 500 freestyle, Hunt had a winning time of 4:33.15. Stephan Todorovic of Greenwich finished second in 4:36.98 and Milne was third in 4:40.03.
“The 500 was a great swim,” Hunt said. “Stephan (Todorovic) also had a great race. He was two lanes away. He pushed me through the first half of the race and made me really work for it.”
Bryant’s victory came in the 50-yard freestyle. In the meet’s closest finish, the speedy Bryant touched the wall in 21.64 seconds. Greenwich sophomore Nicholas Malchow was a blink of an eye behind him in 21.76, as were Greenwich senior Nicolas de la Sierra (21.89) and Newtown senior Colby Delia (22.01).
Bryant’s time was slightly off his own school record of 21.31, which he set while winning the 50 freestyle at the FCIAC championship.
Ridgefield also received top-eight individual finishes from Ethan Murray (sixth, 1:46.05) in the 200 freestyle; Luke Hruska (fifth, 1:57.07) in the 200 individual medley; Linney O’Malley (seventh, 53.18) in the 100 butterfly; Andrew Yu (fourth, 48.09) and Gavin Egerton (sixth, 48.83) in the 100 freestyle; Matthew Johnston (eighth, 5:04.42) in the 500 freestyle; Yu (fourth, 53.14) and Johnston (seventh, 56.11) in the 100 backstroke; and Bryant (fourth, 59.62) in the 100 breaststroke.
The Tigers had top-three finishes in all three relay races.
Hunt, Murray, Hruska, and Bryant combined to place second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.30), and Murray, Yu, Egerton, and Hunt were second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:13.60).
Yu, Hruska, O’Malley, and Bryant added a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.10.
