St. Pierre, Ridgefield get past Ludlowe, 61-53

For the first three quarters, the Ridgefield boys basketball tried to push the tempo in Thursday night’s home game against Fairfield Ludlowe.

That strategy, however, had its drawbacks for the Tigers.

“We weren’t as disciplined in our rotations as we wanted to be, and our attention to detail wasn’t great,” Ridgefield coach Andrew McClellan said.

But clinging to a three-point lead, 40-37, entering the fourth quarter, the Tigers played their best basketball of the night at a critical time.

Ridgefield outscored the Falcons, 21-16, in the final eight minutes to secure a 61-53 victory and end a three-game losing streak.

“In the fourth quarter, our attention to detail was much better,” McClellan said. “Because of that, we forced them to take tougher shots.”

Senior guard James St. Pierre scored nine of his game-high 24 points in the last period, going six-for-six from the line and hitting a 3-pointer. Matt Misurelli added three points in the fourth quarter for the Tigers, and Johnny Briody converted two key free throws.

“James was clutch for us, and some other guys made plays,” McClellan said. “Ludlowe was organized and disciplined. I thought we played well in spurts during the first three quarters, and then we played well for nearly the entire fourth quarter.”

Ridgefield (5-3 overall) led 8-6 at the end of the opening quarter and 22-19 at halftime. Each team scored 18 points in the third quarter, leaving the Tigers ahead by three going into the final period.

NOTES: Jeff Meyers had 17 points (12 in the second half) for Ludlowe, which fell to 3-5 this season. Meyers hit three 3-pointers. Teammate James Bourque also reached double figures, finishing with 13 points.

Junior forward Matt DeLuca came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points for Ridgefield. DeLuca also grabbed four rebounds.

Ridgefield was playing its second straight game without starting guard Luke McGarrity. McClellan is hopeful that McGarrity (bone bruise) will be cleared to return next week.
