Sweep for Ridgefield hoop teams

The Ridgefield High boys and girls basketball teams both registered victories on Thursday night.

In the opening round of the Masuk Holiday Tournament in Monroe, the RHS girls routed Hamden, 53-22.

The Tigers (5-2) will now face FCIAC rival Trumbull in the championship game on Saturday at 7 at Masuk High. Trumbull beat Ridgefield in the season-opening game earlier this month.

Following a low-scoring first quarter, which ended with the Tigers ahead, 6-2, Ridgefield outscored Hamden by an 18-4 margin in the second period to take a 24-6 halftime lead.

Sandy Carpenter had 15 points for Ridgefield and Emma Glubiak added 14 points.

Carly Mercede finished with nine points and Rebecca Lawrence had eight points.

In Weston, the RHS boys hoop team outscored the host Trojans, 18-7, in the final quarter to earn a 56-37 non-conference victory.

The Tigers (4-1) got 19 points and 14 rebounds from Kurt Steidl. Jeff Racy added 11 points and Patrick Racy had nine points.
