Stephen Antkiw, 96, of Ridgefield, died peacefully on Friday morning, December 28, 2018 at Danbury Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Joan Antkiw who died in 2001.
Mr. Antkiw was born on September 27, 1922 in Passaic, New Jersey. He married his dear, late wife, Joan in Marietta, Ohio in 1948.
Mr. Antkiw interrupted his studies at Marietta College in Marietta, OH to serve as a US Navy Officer in the Pacific during World War II. Upon return from World War II, he completed his studies at Marietta College; earning a B.S. in Physics. He received his Master of Science degree from the University of Delaware and worked as a nuclear physicist, spending many years with the Schlumberger Corporation of Ridgefield, CT.
Mr. Antkiw received the State of CT Veterans Wartime Service Medal in 2008. His World War II recorded interview and LSM-174 crew pictures are archived by the Ridgefield Historical Society.
Recently, Mr. Antkiw enjoyed his time spent with the Ridgefield Men’s Club and the Spanish and Music classes offered at Founders Hall.
He is survived by his nephew, John Hickey Jr. and his wife, Penny; as well as three nieces, Eileen Weber and her husband, Lee; Joanna McGuigan and her husband, Michael and Rosemary Vargas and her husband, Hector.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at 1:15 PM at St. Mary’s Church, 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ridgefield. Friends will be received on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ridgefield Library or Founders Hall.
