Max Bernstein, dropped in to land at East Ridge Middle School on Sunday, Sept. 23, for the town’s annual Safety Day. Apparently, there’s nothing complex about the Army-surplus chopper. “This is like driving your dad’s ’57 pickup,” said Capt. Wilcox. — Peter Yankowski photos

The Ridgefield Police Benevolent Association, the Ridgefield Volunteer Fire Department and the Ridgefield Professional Firefighters Association hosted the town’s annual Safety Day in the parking lot of East Ridge Middle School Sunday, Sept. 23.

The free event featured Eagle Three, the Stratford Police Department’s 1973 “Kiowa” helicopter. Pilot Capt. Al Wilcox and co-pilot, Ofc. Max Bernstein landed the old bird on the East Ridge lawn.

Apparently, there’s nothing complex about the Army-surplus chopper.

“This is like driving your dad’s ’57 pickup,” said Capt. Wilcox.

Safety Day also featured a K-9 demonstration with Officer Shawn Murray and K-9 Loki.

RVNA, Lyme Connection, Ridgefield Police Benevolent Association, Ridgefield Fire Department, C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team), Firearm Safety, and the CT S.A.R.T (State Animal Response Team) hosted information tables at the event.

Fire and police vehicles were also on display.
