Joan M. Edwards, age 87, longtime resident of Ridgefield, Connecticut and St. Augustine, Florida passed away on July 24.
Born in and raised Blackpool, England, the daughter of Leslie and Alice Fish, she emigrated to the United States with her husband George in 1956. They eventually settled in Ridgefield and lived on Stony Hill Road for many years and later on Hessian Drive.
Joan spent most of her career at Dunlap and Associates, a consulting firm in Norwalk, Connecticut where she retired as a senior partner. She made significant contributions to the field of human factors engineering and its application to the design of industrial machinery.
Active in local politics, Joan and her husband George served in a variety of roles within the local Democratic Party and both were active in protests against the Vietnam War. Her goal was to be added to President Nixon’s enemy list, an achievement that was never officially confirmed.
Joan and George retired to St. Augustine, Florida where they walked the beach, protected sea turtles, and hosted family get-togethers. Joan served for many years as president of the Villages of Vilano neighborhood association.
Joan is survived by her three sons, Nick, David and Mark, her daughters-in-law Linda and Ayesha, her sister Marjorie, her niece Carol, her nephew Tony and her three grandchildren Matthew, Lauren and Alannah.
Joan’s family would like to thank the caregivers of the Hospice of the Miami Valley and The Wellington at Dayton. In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, 33 West 1st St., Suite 500, Dayton, Ohio 45402.
