Celebrating the school’s namesake and tradition, the children of Veterans Park Elementary School   participated in a school-wide Veteran’s Day program on Monday, Nov. 12.

Joining the children were local veterans, Bruce Simon and Ewan Cummins. Mr. Simon, a frequent substitute teacher at Veterans Park (including a stint in grade one on the day of this program) served four years in the Air Force, two in Texas and two in Europe, servicing air crafts.

Mr. Cummins, whose wife is a grade three teacher at Veterans Park, served five years in the United States Army, including two one-year terms in Iraq as a medic taking care of the sick and injured.

Both Mr. Simon and Mr. Cummins spoke to the children, encouraging them to express gratitude to the veterans they meet and to consider careers and participation in public service so they too can help their community, state and country.

All of the children, from kindergarten to grade five, had an opportunity to participate and pay tribute during the program by saying aloud the name of a veteran family member who has served our country.

All this was followed by a spirited rendition of This Land is Your Land.

Third graders Christopher D’Urso and Jessica Lavorgna read veterans’ family names.
