DeStefano pitches Ridgefield softball past Stamford

Single runs in three innings and a strong pitching performance by freshman Alyssa DeStefano carried the Ridgefield High softball team to a 3-1 victory over Stamford on Wednesday at RHS.

The win came in the Tigers’ first home game of the season. Less than 24 hours later, Ridgefield was back on the same field, losing to Fairfield Warde, 12-2, on Thursday morning.

The split left the Tigers with a 1-2 overall record this spring.

In Wednesday’s game against Stamford, Ridgefield grabbed a quick 1-0 lead. The Tigers turned a double play in the top of the first inning and then went ahead when Sabrina Grizzaffi reached on an error, stole second base, and scored on Mallory Shofi’s single to center field.

DeStefano struck out the side in the top of the second, and Ridgefield added its second run in the bottom of the frame. Makenna Skrobar’s single and walks to Mikayla Melahn and Claire Filaski loaded the bases before Skrobar scored on Grizzaffi’s bunt single for a 2-0 lead.

The score stayed that way until the top of the sixth inning. A Stamford player doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a single, cutting Ridgefield’s lead to 2-1.

But the Tigers got that run back in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead, 3-1, and DeStefano then kept Stamford scoreless in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Although Ridgefield has just two upperclassmen — Shofi (a senior) and Lauren Bayer (a junior) — on its roster, head coach Lauren Greywacz said they are setting a positive example.

“The young girls are following the leadership of our upperclassmen, and we are all learning to play as one united team,” said Greywacz.
