Veronica Carroll Neligan

Veronica Carroll Neligan, 90, a longtime resident of Ridgefield, CT and devoted wife of the late Patrick Neligan, M.D., died peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2018 surrounded by her children and grandchildren at Meadow Ridge, in Redding, CT.

Mrs. Neligan was born in Dublin, Ireland on September 4, 1927, the eldest daughter of Peter and Margaret (Ward) Carroll and is predeceased by her sisters Madeleine Dowling and Margaret (Pearl) Gallagher of Dublin.

She graduated from Loreto College St. Stephen’s Green and was a literary editor early in her career. Being a descendant from the historic Cearbhall (Carroll) family, her roots were deep in Ireland and she owned a second home “Trawnahirree” in West Cork, allowing her frequent trips there to share with friends and family.

Emigrating to America with her Irish husband in 1954, Mrs. Neligan became a dedicated and active parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church for over fifty years and taught catechism. Her passion to help others was seen in her volunteer work as President of the Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association, a board member of the Board of Trustees at Norwalk Hospital, and many other altruistic organizations.

She loved gardening and was a lifelong member of the Ridgefield Garden Club and served as President and was Zone II Chairman for the Garden Club of America. Also, she served on the Ridgefield Historical Society and was known for her incredible knowledge of the town’s history and people.

She was known for her beauty and warmth to all, and will be sadly missed by her six children: three sons, David of Boston, MA, and his wife, Lynn; Brian of Charlotte, NC and his wife Elizabeth; Patrick of Ridgefield, and his wife, Catherine; three daughters, Deirdre Neligan of Harbor Island, SC, Lorna Colarusso and her husband, Frank, of Ridgefield; and Aideen Vergara and her husband Cesar, also of Ridgefield. Known affectionately as “Nana,” she was adored by her fifteen grandchildren: Patrick, C. Agustin, Marshall, Spencer, Emma, Sophie, Millie, Ava, Maeve, Miranda, Quentin, Margot, Laura, Matthew and Henry. She is also survived by her in-laws Mary and Len Gillick, and many nieces and nephews in Dublin, Ireland.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate nursing and CNA staff at Ridge Crest Health Center and to the dedicated service of Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County.

The family will receive friends at the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield on Thursday, March 15th, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 10:15 A.M. at St. Mary Church, 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. A private entombment with follow in the Neligan Family Mausoleum at St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield.
