Ridgefield boys hoop uses late comeback to beat Ludlowe

The Ridgefield High boys basketball pulled off a late rally to edge winless Fairfield Ludlowe, 44-43, on Friday night in Fairfield.

Ridgefield trailed 40-30 with 3:22 left in the fourth quarter before outscoring the Falcons, 14-3, the rest of the way. Brenden McNamara hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining, putting the Tigers ahead, 44-43 lead. Ludlowe was unable to get off a quality shot before the final buzzer.

“I was proud of the way we did not give up,” said Ridgefield head coach Andrew McClellan, whose team improved to 6-2 with its fourth straight triumph. “But if we want to be the team the players think we can be, then we have to approach games in a different way.

“We came out flat and not ready emotionally to play,” added McClellan. “They [Ludlowe] were.”

Ridgefield was down 24-11 at halftime and 34-26 through three quarters.

Searching for its first win — and playing before a vocal home crowd — Ludlowe was unable to close out the Tigers.

“We finally started hitting some three-pointers and made a number of steals,” said McClellan. “Ludlowe also had some turnovers.”

Chris Knachel (eight) and McNamara (five) combined for 13 of Ridgefield’s points in the final quarter. Knachel had two of the Tigers’ four three-pointers in the fourth period, with James St. Pierre and Alex Price each adding one three-pointer.

St. Pierre finished with 12 points for Ridgefield. Knachel added 11 points, Price had 10 points, and McNamara contributed nine points.

Ludlowe dropped to 0-9 with the loss.

“The lesson we tried to talk about this season was respecting our opponent no matter their record,” said McClellan. “Clearly we did not accomplish that tonight.”
