Neighboring Weston has issued a formal “red alert” about aggressive coyotes, but a Ridgefielder has experienced a close call at his home on Stawberry Ridge Road in the Twin Ridge section of town, near Weir Farm.
Friday afternoon, Bill Murrell was in his back yard, playing with his beagle, Brandi, who weighs only about 27 pounds.
“I went into the kitchen to get a glass of water and happened to look out the window,” he said. “Two coyotes suddenly came running out of the woods straight for my dog.
“When I came around the house they were both about five feet away from the dog and circling. When the coyotes saw me, they ran back into the woods behind the house.
“Luckily Brandi was unharmed. It is amazing how fast it can happen —I wasn’t in the house more than two minutes.
“I would have thought that I could leave my dog outside for two minutes in the middle of the afternoon! Now I know better!”
