Although it was considered one of the pre-season conference favorites, the New Canaan boys golf team got off to an unspectacular start, going 4-3-1 over its first seven matches.
The Rams, however, have picked up the pace since then, meaning Ridgefield head coach Mike Merati knew Monday’s match between the teams would be a close one.
New Canaan got the better of the Tigers on the final two holes to come away with a narrow 156-157 victory at the Ridgefield Golf Course.
“We didn’t play poorly, but we left some shots out on the course,” said Merati, whose team is now 14-3. “New Canaan just outplayed us at the end.”
Dan Kile, David Dobson and Sean Brady all shot four-over par 39’s to lead the Tigers. Will Senesac completed the scoring with a 40.
Pacing New Canaan, which improved to 11-4-1 with the win, was Michael Swift, who shot a 37 to earn medalist honors.
“It was the type of match where we had to figure out a way to grind out a win,” said Merati. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that.”
