Ridgefield High School students were winners when the 2013 regional
Scholastic Art Awards, sponsored by the Connecticut Art Education
Association, were presented in a ceremony at the University of
Hartford recently. The awards recognized the achievements of
talented art students from 140 schools in Connecticut. The
students’ artwork was juried by professional artists and university
faculty and was selected by merit for inclusion in the exhibit.
Five award winners was more than most of the 140 schools had. Gold
Portfolio Award winners were: Erin Cecoini, Erin Coghlan, Annie
Polchinski, and McCall Keller. Jillian Yaun received an Honorable
Mention in Digital Art. Erin Cecoini received an $80,000
scholarship to the Hartford Art School, and Erin Coghlan, a $60,000
scholarship to the Hartford Art School. All of the Gold Portfolio
Award winners received $20,000 scholarships to both Savannah
College of Art & Design and New Hampshire Art Institute.
RHS art teachers Anne Lester, Jessica Yagid, Dana Phelan, and Jane
Grassi sponsored the student participants. Students receiving Gold
Portfolio Awards at the regional level will have their artwork
submitted to the National Scholastic Art Awards judging
committee. If awarded National Scholastic Art Awards students
receive additional scholarship and recognition. The National
Scholastic Art Award ceremony is held at Carnegie Hall in New York
City in June.
