Elizabeth J. Benn

UPDATED — Elizabeth J. Benn, 50, of Cos Cob, CT, formerly of Ridgefield, died on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, with her loving family at her side.  She fought a long and brave battle with leukemia.

Elizabeth was born in Danbury, CT, February 16, 1962, daughter of Robert C. and Gladys (Breckwoldt) Benn of Ridgefield, CT.  She attended Ridgefield schools,  graduated Ridgefield High School in the Class of 1980, received her Bachelors of Arts degree from Muhlenberg College in 1984, and her Masters degree from Boston College.  She did further work at Columbia University, where she received a Masters in Education.

An educator for the past twenty-five years, she was first employed with the Greenwich Academy and at the time of her passing had been with the Greenwich Public School system for eighteen years as a kindergarten teacher.

Liz was a member of the Congregational Church of Ridgefield and a member of the CT Teacher’s Association.

In addition to her parents of Ridgefield, Elizabeth is survived by a brother, Robert C. Benn and his wife, Laura of Washington, CT; a sister, Nancy Smith and her husband, Anthony of Brookfield, CT.   She was particularly fond of all her nieces and nephews, Maren Elizabeth Benn and Rob Benn of Washington, CT, and Douglas and Amanda Smith of Philadelphia, PA, Jason Smith of New York City, NY, and Christie Smith of Brookfield, CT.   She is survived by her aunt and uncle, William and Elsie Breckwoldt of Ramona, CA.  Liz is also survived by many, many close and dear friends and colleagues.  She was a friend with an open heart to all who knew her.  Elizabeth valued her relationships with many, many families of the Old Greenwich School community, and most of all, she treasured her students.  Liz will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Memorial services  will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich.

There will be no calling hours.
