Birgit Almgren Lindeberg of Easton, a retired high school and college educator who grew up in Ridgefield, died Thursday, Jan. 31. She was 78 years old and the wife of George Lindeberg.
Mrs. Lindeberg was the daughter of the late Gunnar and Ingeborg Almgren. She grew up in Ridgefield, was valedictorian at Ridgefield High School, Class of 1952, and graduated from UConn in 1956.
She worked in education, mostly as a high school English teacher, and ended her career in charge of the tutoring center at Norwalk Community College.
She also had a master’s degree in English as a Second Language from Fairfield University.
Ms. Lindeberg traveled around the United States, Mexico and in Europe by train, plane and RV.
“She loved people, was curious and joyous, and brought laughter and smiles to everyone she met,” her family said. “She had a special connection with children and youth.”
Her other interests included singing alto in her church choir and the Northern Lights Chorus, regular breakfasts and card-playing with friends and activities with the Young at Heart senior group in Easton She was an active member of Jesse Lee United Methodist Church in Easton for more than 40 years.
Besides her husband of 56 years, Mrs. Lindeberg is survived by her children Lisa (Elias) Soria of Redlands, Calif., Steven (Kasia) Lindeberg of Fairfield, Christine Lindeberg of Easton, and Erika Lindeberg (Steven Davis) of Lebanon; a brother Rolf (Pauline) Almgren of Ridgefield; sisters-in-law Lillian Kennedy, Mildred “Lindy” Warren and Doris Lindeberg; grandchildren Aleksandra, Dylan, Natalie and Caroline; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Birgit’s life was held Monday, Feb. 4, at Jesse Lee United Methodist Church, 25 Flat Rock Road, Easton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions payable to “Jesse Lee UMC” may be mailed to the church in her honor.
