Avery Buckanavage turned 12 years old on 12/12/12 and decided to throw a party to mark this once in a lifetime milestone but with a twist.
Rather than bring a gift for the birthday girl, she asked her friends to donate to The Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a local foundation that helps children with special needs and their families.
“I decided to have my friends donate to the Molly Ann Tango Foundation instead of bringing gifts because I thought that I should give back to people in need,” Avery said. “Some of the kids need important necessities to make their life better.”
Avery has been a student at the Enchanted Garden School of Dance since kindergarten and has been in their benefit performance for the foundation, “Nuts about the Nutcracker” for the past seven years.
“I know that the Nutcracker Performance directly benefits the Molly Ann Tango Foundation,” she said. “We talk about it in class and there are signs and pictures up at the performance.”
Avery and her friends partied at the Ridgefield Boys and Girls Club and raised $1,400.
“I was happy and excited that with my friends we raised so much money and that together we are able to help a child get what they really need,” she said.
