Hazel Baldwin, 99, homemaker, Ridgefielder’s mother

Hazel Pruitt Baldwin, a longtime Westport resident and mother of a Ridgefielder, died on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Laurel Ridge Health Care Center in Ridgefield.  She was in her 100th year and had been a 60-year resident of Westport.

Mrs. Baldwin was born on March 31, 1913 in Wendell, N.C. to William Crawford  Pruitt and Nina Rhoads Pruitt. She moved to Washington, D.C., and married Marshall Baldwin on Dec. 6, 1940.  She worked at the Chevy Chase Building and Loan, and then became a Navy wife when her husband joined that service. She later worked for the United Fund of Westport and Weston.

Her family said her most important career was as homemaker and mother to Randall Baldwin and his wife, MaryAnn, of Ridgefield, and Stephen Baldwin of Rochester N.Y. She also leaves grandsons, Geoffrey Baldwin of Kent N.Y., and Matthew Baldwin of Westport; as well as a great grandson and three great granddaughters. Her sister, Ruth Roundy lives in Rockville, Md.  Her husband predeceased her.

She was an active member of the PEO Sisterhood, and the Westport Women’s Club. She was a parishioner at the Saugatuck Congregational Church where she served on the Board of Deacons as well as many other committees.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Greens Farms Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, Westport.
