A Bridgeport woman was arrested for driving while intoxicated after police say she hit a cop car and sped off early Friday, Jan. 25.
Heather Mercik, 30, was charged with driving while intoxicated, evading responsibility and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle.
Police say Officer Anthony McMahon was performing a motor vehicle stop on Route 7 when his “police cruiser was struck by a passing motorist. The motorist fled the scene and was stopped a short time later.”
Ms. Mercik, the alleged motorist, was held on a $1,000 bond and had a court date scheduled later that day.
Police say both cars were towed after receiving “moderate” damage.
Traffic stops, though routine, are among the most dangerous tasks officers perform.
According to FBI data between 2001 and 2010, 17%, or 95 out of 541 police officer deaths relating to their work occurred during traffic stops.

Jake, you do not say if this was a Ridgefield incident. I assume it is, correct?
