Judith Aveline Gaugler, a former Ridgefielder who was active in real estate, died Dec. 20 after a long illness surrounded by family. She was 77.
She was born Dec. 22, 1934 in Evanston, Ill. to James and Aveline Butler. She attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, graduating in 1956 with a B.A. in interior design. She went on to become a flight attendant with United Airlines and then Pan American, traveling the world before marrying Jack E. Gaugler in California.
Ms. Gaugler moved to Ridgefield in 1972 with her four children who attended Ridgefield public schools.

She was active in choral groups here, including the Ridgefield Chorale and the Songspinners, a group that performed in senior citizen centers and for charitable organizations. She also belonged to the Ridgefield chapter of the American Association of University Women.
Ms. Gaugler is survived by her partner of more than 30 years, Richard K. Barnes; her daughters, Heidi (Mrs. Kevin Dettmering) of Columbia Falls, Mont.; Gretchen (Mrs. Andrew Cooke) of Longmont, Colo.; Kristin (Mrs. Thomas Pryor) of Syracuse, N.Y.; and son Kurt (wife Alexandra Cileone) of Denver, Colo. (currently living abroad in Amsterdam); and two grandchildren, Dane and Blythe.
